Gravenhurst, ON History

Gravenhurst has had a few names over its history, including McCabes Landing and Sawdust City. It was eventually named “Gravenhurst” after the title of a book. Gravenhurst grew as a transport hub, being a primary embarkation point for steam ships on the lakes. It was also the northern terminus of the Toronto, Simcoe and Muskoka Junction Railway.

Timbre processing has also been a historically important industry in Gravenhurst.

Another notable point in Gravenhurst’s history was the presence of a WW2 prisoner of war camp in the area, the remains of which can still be found at Ungerman Park.
